India’s Andhra Pradesh state government readies 10GW tender for new solar capacity

first_imgIndia’s Andhra Pradesh state government readies 10GW tender for new solar capacity FacebookTwitterLinkedInEmailPrint分享Mint:In a surprise move, the Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy-led Andhra Pradesh government is expediting efforts to float India’s largest solar tender for setting up 10 gigawatt (GW) capacity, said three people aware of the development.Interestingly, the mega tender accounting for 14% of India’s green energy capacity to supply electricity to the farmers is in the works, even as 5.2 GW of solar and wind energy projects are hanging fire, due to the state government’s decision to reopen renewable energy contracts inked under the previous N Chandrababu Naidu government.State energy secretary N. Srikanth confirmed the mega solar tender development and said that Andhra Pradesh Green Energy Corporation Ltd (APGECL) is the nodal agency for the same. This proposed mega contract also comes at a time, when India’ solar power tariffs have touched a record low of ₹2.36 per unit at an auction conducted by state-run Solar Energy Corporation of India Ltd. Falling clean power tariffs putting an already awarded 16.8 GW solar and wind energy capacity in limbo, as fund starved state electricity distribution companies (discoms) are unwilling to sign contracts for these previously awarded projects at a comparatively higher tariff, Mint reported earlier. Also, the Punjab government is seeking to renegotiate clean energy contracts for operational projects.Andhra Pradesh has around 7.7 GW of solar and wind projects and is home to India’s second-largest installed capacity of clean energy, accounting for around 10% of the country’s green energy capacity, with investments of ₹60,000 crore. The state has 4,092 MW of installed wind power projects awarded through feed-in tariffs. Also, the resource-rich state has 3,230 MW of solar power projects awarded through competitive bidding.Clean energy projects comprise more than a fifth of India’s installed power generation capacity. India has 34.6 GW of solar power and seeks to produce 100 GW from solar projects by March 2022.[Utpal Bhaskar]More: Andhra Pradesh to float India’ largest solar tender for 10 GW capacitylast_img read more

5 steps toward increasing your firewall security

first_imgOctober is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, which means it’s a fitting time for financial institutions to examine their cybersecurity efforts and protocols, and make any necessary adjustments. However, with such high-profile cybercrimes as WannaCry, Petya and the Equifax breach dominating headlines this year, financial institutions hardly need a reminder of the threats that cyberattacks pose. The frightening diversity and sophistication of these immense attacks, as well as the unfortunate promise of future strikes, have left pressing questions on how best to quell them—many of which remain largely unanswered. But where do financial institutions even begin? The nature of cybercrime is complex, and the relentlessness of ransomware, the diligence of DDoS and the frequency of fraud are enough to leave even the most seasoned cybersecurity professionals cross-eyed. Although these cyber adversaries are indeed daunting, there’s no need to be overwhelmed. The best place to start is with a fundamental element of any institution’s cybersecurity efforts—a strong firewall. What is a Firewall?A firewall is one of the most basic, yet essential, cybersecurity tools available to financial institutions. Firewalls act as a gatekeeper for your network, protecting it from the outside global network by inspecting all inbound or outbound traffic and determining if it meets the criteria to pass through. Without a firewall, any hacker could easily breach your network and cause havoc. Likewise, a misconfigured or out-of-date firewall provides little protection.Regulations Surrounding FirewallsIn 2011, the FFIEC issued its Cybersecurity Assessment Tool, or CAT, which details financial institutions’ regulatory requirements for maintaining firewalls. In understanding the tremendous risk that follows poor firewall architecture, the FFIEC also mandated that financial institutions be subject to quarterly audits of their firewall security protocols. These regulatory requirements, coupled with the threat of looming cybercrime, have forced the hands of many credit unions across the country. Now, more than ever, financial institutions must look at their firewall security efforts and ensure they are not only compliant, but also risk averse. 5 Steps to Strong Firewall Security Firewall security starts with these five steps, which ensure your institution’s firewall remains strong and secure: Get in the Head of a Cybercriminal. Ask yourself the question: is our firewall hackable? Answer that question by actively attempting to bypass your firewall, or incorporate the services of a firewall security vendor to weed out any vulnerabilities. Once you’ve identified these vulnerabilities, or “holes,” patch them to ensure cybercriminals don’t have access. Verify Rule Efficiency. Firewalls operate on a set of rules that allow certain traffic in and out of your network. Be sure to update this ruleset regularly, accounting for new threats, and that all current rules are still efficient and relevant. Often, breaches result from old configuration that’s no longer applicable or relevant at the time of the breach.Monitor Security Proactively. Deploying a firewall and ensuring it remains current with regular vulnerability checkups and firewall reviews is important. Take it a step further by proactively monitoring firewall events. This gives you a fighting chance toward knowing when attacks are happening and if a breach occurred, so that proper steps can be taken.Examine Password Credentials. Passwords are an essential element for keeping your institution’s data secure. Ensure that all employees with rights to sensitive data have complex passwords that have the appropriate length and strength. Keep Your Firewall Updated. Remember, the FFIEC requires quarterly audits to review your institution’s firewall security. However, just sticking to the bare minimum of these requirements exponentially increases both your risk and vulnerability—putting your institution at the mercy of cybercriminals eager to steal passwords, customer data and even funds. It is imperative that you keep your institution’s firewall security top of mind. Ensure that your institution has adequate firewall security and meets regulatory guidelines with a firewall review and audit. Doing so allows you to discover and address any vulnerabilities ahead of regulators—and more importantly—cybercriminals. 9SHARESShareShareSharePrintMailGooglePinterestDiggRedditStumbleuponDeliciousBufferTumblr,Shawn Eftink Shawn Eftink is a product manager for CSI’s Managed Services Division. Labor unions feel ‘terrorized’ by unscheduled protest at headquarters: Leader

first_imgRead also: Key points of labor reform in omnibus bill on job creation: What we know so far“We’ve called the Pulo Gadung district police and they said the police did not receive any plans for a protest at our secretariat,” she said, adding that the police should investigate the incident and uncover the perpetrators.Neither the chief of the spokesperson for the East Jakarta Police responded immediately to a request for comment when contacted by the Post. The government considers the bill on job creation to be essential as it has been struggling to attract foreign investment to help improve economic growth. If passed, the omnibus bill would amend about 1,200 articles in more than 80 prevailing laws, including the Labor Law, which have been blamed for hampering investment in the country.Labor unions, however, rejected the bill after rumors surfaced that it would reduce severance payments, enforce an hourly pay system to replace the minimum wage and eliminate sanctions against companies that fail to provide health insurance. The government has set up a team comprising government officials, businesspeople and labor representatives and tasked it with coordinating deliberations and public consultations over the omnibus bill following the rejection by the unions.According to Coordinating Economic Ministerial Regulation No. 121/2020, the ministry set up on Feb. 7 a team of 14 labor representatives, 12 business representatives and 19 government officials.Confederation of Indonesian Trade Unions president Said Iqbal, however, told the Post that the newly formed team did not involve the labor groups much and instead had a tendency to divide them. (mpr)Topics : Congress Alliance of Indonesian Labor Unions (KASBI) chairwoman Nining Elitos called an unscheduled protest, which was held at the union’s secretariat, an “act of terror” against them. The unions firmly reject the controversial omnibus bill on job creation. An unknown group of people staged the protest without any prior notice at the KASBI secretariat in Pulo Gadung district, East Jakarta, on Monday. The protesters, who arrived by public minivan at about 9 a.m., briefly spoke about the omnibus bill before they started burning tires and demanding KASBI be dissolved, according to Nining. “This is an act of terror against our unions. We believe that this [protest] occurred because of our stance on the omnibus bill,” she told The Jakarta Post on Monday. She alleged that the unknown protesters are supporters of the omnibus bill and were there to intimidate the unions.“If they were talking about the omnibus bill, it indicates that they could be supporters of the bill. However, we’re not completely sure either,” she said. She added that there were no police officers at the scene during the protest and the Pulo Gadung district police did not receive any information regarding the demonstration.last_img read more

ICC World Cup Don’t compare Kohli’s IPL captaincy record with that of India: Ganguly

first_imghighlights Bangalore finished second from the bottom in the recently concluded IPL. Ganguly believes World cup stint will be different for Virat as captain. India will play their first World Cup game against South Africa on June 5.  Kolkata: Former captain Sourav Ganguly on Tuesday insisted that Virat Kohli’s IPL captaincy will not have an impact in the World Cup as he enjoys a good record as an ODI skipper. The biggest advantage for Kohli will be the support of two very successful leaders — Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Rohit Sharma — on whom he can fall back on during testing situations. Royal Challengers Bangalore’s repeated failures in the Indian Premier League have put the spotlight on Kohli’s leadership skills but Ganguly said Indian captaincy is a different ball game.”Don’t compare Virat Kohli’s IPL captaincy record with that of India. His captaincy records for India is very good actually. He’s got him in his team as the vice-captain. Dhoni is there. So he’s well supported,” Ganguly told PTI on the sidelines of a promotional programme. The 46-year-old felt Hardik Pandya will play a key role in India’s campaign at the mega event, starting May 30 in England.”Hardik Pandya will play a key role. He is in tremendous form. He will be very, very important for India’s chances.” The former left-handed batsman picked Pakistan alongside India, Australia and England as the four semifinalists in the upcoming World Cup, saying their records in world tournaments in England is remarkable. England has been a ‘lucky’ venue for the Pakistan, who had won the 2017 Champions Trophy beating India and had also bagged their maiden World Twenty20 title in 2009.”Pakistan’s record in world tournaments in England is remarkable. They won the Champions Trophy two years ago, they won the 2009 World T20 in England.”He also cited the recent example of Pakistan’s second ODI against England, in which they almost chased down a mammoth 374 before going down by only 12 runs.”Pakistan always play well in England. You see the last game in England. England got 374 and Pakistan just lost by 12 runs. They also beat England in England in Test matches there because of their bowling lineup.”Ganguly, however, was quick to add that Virat Kohli’s men should not be wary of Pakistan and they would prove to be strong contenders.”I don’t believe in records. Both of them will have to play well on that particular day. India will be a very good side. They will be very hard to beat. Team which has the likes of Kohli, Rohit, Shikhar Dhawan can’t be weak.”Asked to compare this team with that of his team of 2003 that lost to Australia in the final, Ganguly said: “Both the teams are of different generations. We played the final in 2003. I hope they play the final and win it.”Indian cricket is so strong. And we have been strong for the last 25-30 years. Every world competition that we play, we will have a chance. This team has as much chance as we had in 2003.”Starting as one of the favourites, India would be under tremendous pressure but Ganguly felt it would bring out the best from Kohli and Co.”So it’s good that India is under pressure, every other team in the World Cup will be under pressure. You don’t want to turn up like a Nepal or an Ireland where the entire world thinks that you’re not going to win.”You rather turn up like an India or an Australia or an England where everybody says this team is going to win the World Cup. So Virat, probably being the best player of the world at the moment, is as much under pressure as anybody else and that will be good for him because he will turn up, work hard, he will be pumped and get India going.”Ganguly said it would be an interesting World Cup as all 10 teams will play each other before the best four qualify for the knockouts. “This team has as much as opportunity. It’s a great World Cup because all 10 teams play against each other and the best four qualify. There are strong teams and you realise England, Pakistan, West Indies all can win.”So it’s good that India is under pressure because it will help them perform and it’s going to be exciting 55 days of cricket,” Ganguly said. Syracuse men’s rugby off to best start in past 3 years

first_imgSyracuse club rugby is comprised of players from 10 countries, most of which come from different backgrounds — like junior Khang Tran.Tran moved from Vietnam to France with aspirations of being a chef, only to be told by his parents that he couldn’t make a career out of cooking. While studying in France, Tran found the sport of rugby. Tran carried the game with him to Syracuse, where it has tied him in with other players from varying backgrounds. With a team comprised of players from Australia, Bangladesh, England, France, Hong Kong, Spain, South Africa, the United States, and Wales, the sport serves as a link. This year, strong team cohesion has Syracuse men’s rugby 4-1 on the season and atop their league with three matches remaining.“This club is easily the tightest team I’ve been apart,” said sophomore Dillon Wall. “We’re all really good friends and we love to go out and play [the sport] with each other.”Head coach Rob Wilson, who has been with the program since its founding in 1969, admitted that it can be a challenge coaching such a diverse team because of the various styles of play and background experiences. Wilson tries to make the transition as seamless as possible.AdvertisementThis is placeholder text“We are fairly consistent with our techniques,” Wilson said. “We focus a lot on basic techniques, so I don’t think it’s that difficult for a diverse group of players to understand what we’re trying to do as a team.”Susie Teuscher | Digital Design EditorAt practice, the players start with a game of touch, rugby’s equivalent of two-hand touch football. Assistant coach Dave DeSalvia says that touch is a nice way for the guys to warm up and have fun before their stretching exercises. Those exercises set the tone for the rest of practice. Captain Dallas Haskins, who played rugby for the under-20 national team in Hong Kong, urges his teammates to be precise with each exercise. The stretches are followed by a 4 on 4 game of toss. This drill is a condensed version of the game that allows players to focus on the complexity of the pass-catch situation. Though it appears simple, Wilson explains that it is crucial to success.Wilson breaks the drill down into three essential components: communication, alignment and awareness. Communication lets the passer know the direction and distance of their intended target. If the player is in proper alignment, it allows the passer to focus on the positioning of the defenders and make the best play.“All of it needs to get taken care of because the game gets pretty fast and furious,” Wilson said, “and if you don’t have all those details taken care of then you’re going to be losing possession. Giving the ball to the opposition isn’t a good strategy in most sports.”Wilson and SU have finished .500 or higher in each of the last five seasons. Prior to last year, Syracuse finished in the top two in consecutive seasons. Wilson attributed the 3rd place finish to a lot of inexperience paired with a lack of depth. Now a year older, the Hammerheads cite energy and cohesiveness as the driving forces behind their strong start. Wall, a sophomore scrum half from San Francisco, enjoys the camaraderie most.“The type of energy that you bring can’t be taught,” Haskins said. “And that’s really what’s driving the energy and focus that this team brings into games.” Facebook Twitter Google+ Published on October 9, 2018 at 10:19 pm Contact Tim: [email protected]center_img Commentslast_img read more

Alvarez’s six RBIs power Pirates past Indians

first_imgCLEVELAND (AP)—Pedro Alvarez had one of his best games yet. Still, it was a win by the Pittsburgh Pirates that had him really excited. Alvarez drove in a career-high six runs with his second two-homer game in two days, powering Pittsburgh past the Cleveland Indians 9-5 Sunday. IMPRESSIVE POWER DISPLAY—Pedro Alvarez watches his ball after hitting a three-run home run off Cleveland Indians relief pitcher Esmil Rogers in the fifth inning of a baseball game, Sunday, June 1, in Cleveland. (AP Photo/Tony Dejak) “I’m just glad to help us win the series,” Alvarez said as music blared in the clubhouse following the Pirates’ second victory in three games, giving them a sixth series win in their last seven matchups.Alvarez seemed unfazed by his own accomplishment — hitting three-run homers in the fourth and fifth innings for his fourth career multihomer game. He also doubled, for his first game of three extra-base hits. His previous two multihomer games also came in consecutive games, July 20-21 against Milwaukee.“It’s just coincidence,” Alvarez said of homering twice in consecutive games once again.Manager Clint Hurdle said Alvarez has worked hard to lift his average to .207 with a team-high 12 homers and 34 RBIs, three behind team leader Andrew McCutchen. Alvarez has 10 RBIs in four games after going 10 games without any.“He’s worked hard to get to a better place,” Hurdle said. “He drove one ball to right, then took advantage of a mistake and hit another. He had a very good day at the plate.”Tony Watson (4-0), the second of five Pirates pitchers, worked 1 2-3 innings of relief for the win.Pittsburgh scored nine runs for the second straight game after totaling 13 runs during a four-game losing streak.Alvarez became the first Pirates player with six RBIs in a game since Andy LaRoche did it Sept. 28, 2009, against the Los Angeles Dodgers.Alvarez put the Pirates up 3-2 in the fourth. His line drive into the right field seats came after Cabrera fielded a two-out grounder by Casey McGehee, but threw it away.Alvarez hit a 1-1 pitch over the wall in right for his 12th homer and 9-4 lead.Pittsburgh won a series for only the second time in their last 21 road interleague matchups.last_img read more
