Gugler Ties Single-Round Record; Florida Southern Remains on Top

first_img May 11, 2007PACE, Fla. – Rollins Cristina Gugler tied a national championship record with a third round 69 on Friday at the NCAA Division II Women’s Golf National Championships at Stonebrook Golf Club. Top-ranked Florida Southern continues to lead the eight-team field and is one round away from their fourth women’s golf national championship since 2000.Gugler’s 69 was only the second sub-70 round in NCAA Division II national championship history. Central Oklahoma’s Ashley Kelley shot a third round 69 at the 2005 national championships. After recording a bogie on the first hole, Gugler finished with four birdies, including three on the back nine.”I made too many strategic mistakes yesterday that got me in trouble,” said Gugler. “Playing safe today was the best thing to do. I kept the ball on the fairway and putted very well.”Sunny and hot conditions greeted the golfers in the morning before play was halted at 1:41 p.m. CST due to an impending thunderstorm. The third round was delayed for nearly two hours before play resumed.Only five strokes separate the top eight golfers. Drury’s Tonya Choate is tied for the lead heading into the final round. Choate shot a 71 on Friday and is at three-over 219 (76-72-71). She is tied with Daniela Iacobelli of Florida Tech. Iacobelli, who shared the lead at the start of the third round, shot a 73 on Friday.Individual Maria Garcia Austt of Nova Southeastern lowered her third round score by nine strokes after shooting a 79 on Thursday. She moved into a third place tie at four-over 220 (71-79-70). Austt is tied with Florida Southern’s Lindsey Bergeon, who shot a 74 for the second consecutive round on Friday. Fellow Mocs golfer Heather Burgner is in fifth place with a five-over 221 (75-72-74). Gugler’s record-tying performance helped move her from 13th place to sixth. She stands at seven-over 223 (80-74-69). Florida Southern’s Kim Ulander and Vanessa Vela of Rollins are tied for seventh at eight-over 224.Florida Southern (+22 886) will enter tomorrow’s final round with a 15-stroke lead over second place and second-ranked Rollins (+37 901). Florida Southern’s third round 293 was the lowest round in the tournament. Sixth-ranked Ferris State remains in third place with a 53-over 917. Ninth-ranked Drury’s third round score was 11 strokes lower than their second round total. The Panthers stand in fourth place with a 56-over 920.Twenty-seventh ranked North Dakota shot their best round of the tournament on Friday to remain in fifth place with a 73-over 937. Three strokes back is Tarleton State, who also shot their best round of the tournament on Friday to post a 76-over 940. Northeastern State is seventh with an 81-over 945, while Truman State rounds out the field with a 116-over 980.The fourth and final round will tee off at 8:00 a.m. CST on Saturday.
