first_imgBut Barnes has warned supporters not to get too carried away by the result, insisting England still need to show they can perform at the highest level consistency before we start tipping them for Euro 2020 glory.Southgate is fielding young sides and Barnes says the players need time to develop experience and confidence against the top teams, but admits that largely depends on the players getting regular minutes with their clubs.A number of the players who started against Spain have struggled for regular game time with their clubs so far this term – including goalscorer Marcus Rashford, who has made just four starts for United.Speaking on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, Barnes said: “The big problem we have is, you look at Harry Winks, Ross Barkley, Marcus Rashford, the only way these players are going to improve is if these players play for their clubs week-in, week-out. How are they going to show their consistency?“We see the potential they have, but unless they get the opportunity at their clubs week-in, week-out at the highest level, we’re not going to improve.“These players have to be playing regularly at their clubs, they can’t just turn up for England once every six weeks and get their football from that.”Listen back to John Barnes on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast IN FULL above. 2 England players celebrate against Spain Rashford scored with a superb finish against Spain last_img
