Jamaica’s Sunshine Girls were beaten by 38 goals yesterday in the first encounter in a three-match netball tour of New Zealand. The Sunshine Girls went down 34-72 to a New Zealand team that is two places above them in the netball world ranking. As the score indicates, the host team completely outplayed Jamaica when they met at the Trafalgar Centre in Nelson. New Zealand, the world number two team, led after the first quarter 18-9 and never looked back. Match statistics revealed that Jamaica had far more turnovers and reflected a similar disparity at 43 to 18. The scores in the other three quarters were 16-7, 19-8 and 18-11. Shanice Beckford, who scored 15 goals in 19 tries, and Shantal Slater, with 10 goals from 13 attempts, were the best shooters for the team coached by Minneth Reynolds. Vanessa Walker chipped in with nine goals from 14 tries. The Sunshine Girls, who are world-ranked at number four, will be back in action against New Zealand on Wednesday (Tuesday night Jamaica time). The final match of the tour will be played on September 17. – H.L.
Ginebra beats Meralco again to capture PBA Governors’ Cup title Philadelphia seemed headed for a rout when it scored eight straight points in the third to open an 88-62 advantage after a free throw by Simmons, but the Knicks put up 36 points in the period and were within single digits going to the fourth. It was during the third that Embiid gave the 76ers and plenty of people sitting courtside a scare when he tried to chase down a ball going to the sideline. He went flying just over the head of actress Regina King , who won the Best Supporting Actress award at the Golden Globes, and crashed feet-first into the MSG Network statistician working next to broadcaster Mike Breen.“It’s good that I saved her life I guess, but someone else had to, like, take that,” Embiid said. “I’m sorry about that.”Philadelphia coach Brett Brown’s thoughts on Embiid’s dive?“Just like I think our owners and our fans back home were thinking,” he said. “You respect his aggression, and his passion, but you don’t want that. I say that out of love and care. Spring is definitely in the air at libraries across Donegal as the Spring into Storytime initiative kicks off this April. Thirteen libraries across Donegal will host a variety of interactive, fun and informative storytime events for preschoolers and their families. Kevin McCaul from Donegal Library Service said: “We want to reinforce the importance of reading at home through our Spring into Storytime sessions and we will be sharing hints and tips for parents that will help them develop a love of reading in their children”. He added “With the Easter holidays just around the corner we are keen to help families relax with their children in a welcoming environment while enjoying some special ‘family time’ at our libraries. We want to encourage a more family focused approach to reading with children and raise awareness of the benefits of reading as a fun activity for children and also to let people see the types of services and resources that are available free of charge for children in our libraries.“This is all part of the national ‘Right to Read’ programme and we are asking parents to come along and let Donegal Libraries transform, enrich and inspire you.”This is the 3rd year of the Spring into Story-time initiative which is a Libraries Ireland initiative and events are free of charge and open to everyone. The first event takes place on Wednesday 3rd April at 11.00 am in Central Library through to Saturday 27th April when Bundoran Library will be having a Storytime including “The Natural Company Presents “Wild, Tribe Heros”. A recycling demonstration and childrens games will follow. Joining the library is easy and members can avail of up to 12 books for 3 weeks at a time. Children often love to read the same story over and over, and libraries can facilitate an extension so parents can ensure their young ones get to read their favourite book. The library also offers a range of online resources including parenting magazines, and online courses. For more information call into your local library or visit the What’s On page at donegallibrary.ie or follow Donegal County Library on Facebook or Twitter. They were very aggressive, created on the wings and our keeper Danny Ward was by miles the best player on the pitch, which I think says everything.“We got three lucky points, but three points are three points and we are so happy to have got them.“We should not forget also that we scored two wonderful goals and created other opportunities as well.“But in my opinion QPR deserved more than they got. It doesn’t change that we have got three three points though.“We scored two great goals and in the second half we were unable keep the pressure off.“But how we defended this, and how Wardy kept us in the game and we fought to keep the ball out of our net, was great to see.”See also:Holloway convinced QPR will be safe Ads by Revcontent Trending Articles Urologists: Men, Forget the Blue Pill! Last month, the International Code Council announced that Rhode Island had become the first state in the nation to adopt the International Green Construction Code, which addresses materials, air quality, energy efficiency, and other factors, and is designed to mesh smoothly with existing ICC safety codes. Under provisions of the Rhode Island Green Buildings Act of 2009, which applies to any public project that is owned, leased, or controlled by the state, Rhode Island adopted the IGCC, version 1.0, as a way to incorporate green building practices in new, existing, traditional, and high-performance commercial buildings.Embrace of the IGCC, or other green-code variants, seems unlikely to mimic its swift ascent in Rhode Island, however. Last week, at the ICC conference in Charlotte, North Carolina, for example, one point of discussion was the wisdom of the host state’s possible adoption of code provisions intended to improve the energy efficiency performance of new homes by 30%. (The residential version of the IGCC, which references the requirements of the ICC 700-2800 National Green Building Standard, was co-developed by the ICC and the National Association of Home Builders and approved by the American National Standards Institute. It incorporates mandatory measures and a rating system that evaluates construction and performance features such as lot design and preparation, water efficiency, resource efficiency, and energy efficiency. The ICC 700 also can be amended to accommodate stricter requirements.)Objections and rebuttalsA story published last week by the Charlotte Observer points out that the North Carolina Building Code Council was seriously considered adopting the energy efficiency code when members of the North Carolina Home Builders Association objected to the financial burdens it might impose. One of the NCHBA’s main contentions is that the rules would increase costs for both builders and consumers in ways that would be out of line in a market already battered by the economic downturn. An NCHBA code official, Robert Privott, told the paper that adoption of the entire set of rules in one stroke would be “just too much too quick,” although the association was willing to discuss a compromise that would allow the code to be gradually phased in.Green-building advocates say cost increases incurred by green-code adoption would hardly be onerous, even for entry-level homes, and one of the code’s principal benefits – a reduction in energy costs – would eventually cover the initial added expense of bringing the homes into compliance. Another factor coming into play is the state’s commitment, backed by Governor Bev Perdue and a $500,000 Department of Energy grant for code revisions, to implement energy-efficiency measures. Those measures, in turn, would qualify the state for millions more dollars for energy-saving programs and, by extension, help boost the state’s employment rate, the Observer story notes. That the debate over green-code adoption has occurred during the ICC conference naturally brought added attention to the issues. The NC Building Code Council’s energy code committee is scheduled to review the code-revision proposal within the next two weeks, and the full council is expected to consider the committee’s recommendations in December.
