Shane Watson only 6th batsman to hit 300 T20 sixes

first_imgAustralian all-rounder Shane Watson roared back to form on Tuesday, helping Sydney Thunder to a five-wicket win over Sydney Sixers in the opening match of the Big Bash League at the Sydney Cricket Ground.Chasing 150 for a win, Sydney Thunder rode on Watson’s 46-ball 77 and an unbeaten 12 off 6 balls from Arjun Nair to seal victory off the final ball of the match.Watson’s knock was studded with six sixes and as many boundaries. The skipper also joined an elite list thanks to his swashbuckling innings. The 36-year-old became the sixth batsman to smash 300 sixes in the T20 format after Chris Gayle (819), Kieron Pollard (509), Brendon McCullum (420), Dwayne Smith (351) and David Warner (314).Despite Watson’s contribution, Thunder still needed 16 off the final over as T20 debutant Daniel Sams removed the skipper and Ryan Gibson off successive deliveries in the 18th over. That is when Nair and Aiden Blizzard came to Thunder’s rescue with the pair scoring 24 from the last 13 balls with both hitting two boundaries each.Earlier, the Sixers posted 149/9 batting first with England’s Sam Billings top-scoring with 32 off 21 balls. Nair, Mitchell McClenaghan and Fawad Ahmed picked up two wickets each while Watson bowled an over for 15 runs without any success.Watson retired from all forms of cricket after the 2016 World T20 with more than 10,000 international runs and close to 300 wickets under his belt. He amassed 3731 in 59 Test matches at 35.19, scored 5757 runs in 190 ODIs and smashed 1462 runs in 58 T20Is for Australia.Add to that his 75 Test wickets, 168 ODI wickets and 48 T20I wickets, the burly Aussie was surely one of the finest all-rounders to play the game.advertisementMeanwhile Gayle, who is the leading six-hitter in the shortest version of the game had last week broken his own world record when he slammed 18 sixes in an innings in the Bangladesh Premier League.Gayle hit 18 sixes in the course of his unbeaten 146 off 69 balls for the Rangpur Riders. The 38-year-old Jamaican had smashed 17 sixes during his record-shattering 66-ball 175 not out for Royal Challengers Bangalore vs Pune Warriors in the 2013 IPL.Gayle shared an unbroken 201-run stand with former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum who finished 51 off 43 balls. The Kiwi star hit three sixes which meant Rangpur Riders equalled RCB’s record of 21 sixes – the most by a team in an innings. He completed 11,000 runs in the shortest format of the game, and also became the first to score 20 centuries in T20s. He incidentally became the first player to blast 100 maximums in the BPL.Rangpur Riders went on to beat Dhaka Dynamites by 57 runs to lift their maiden BPL title.last_img read more
