Rafa Benitez to STAY at Newcastle following promotion

first_imgRafa Benitez has confirmed he will stay as Newcastle United manager following the Magpies’ promotion to the Premier League, according to reports. The Spaniard guided the Tyneside club back to the top flight as second division champions, having been unable to save them from relegation last season.Despite his success at St James’ Park this term, there had been suggestions Benitez would walk away in the summer due to a falling out with owner Mike Ashley. However, he has been promised a large budget for transfer dealings following secret talks between the pair, along with managing director Lee Charnley, and a statement from Ashley read: “I’ve confirmed to Rafa and Lee that they can have every last penny that the club generates through promotion, player sales and other means in order to build for next season.”Benitez added: “I’m pleased with how the meeting went and the positive approach we are all taking together to build on what we have started this season.“There will be challenges ahead, of course – the summer will not be easy – but the hard work has been going on for some time and we can now continue positively with the development of the squad ahead of the start of the new season.“I wish fans an enjoyable summer.”This has allayed fears Benitez would leave just 12 months into a three-year contract, and preparations can now start going ahead for the kick-off of the 2017/18 Premier League season.
